1) I discharged from the hospital on 2/18/09, I started working out that day and I weighed 212 lbs on my 5' 10" frame. That may not sound that bad, but as bad as it sounds....my fitness condition was much much worse.

"P" or Pee is for POWER???
Scientists can create cheap hydrogen from urine for use in fuel cells
If you noticed...I don't have any pictures of Tammy (my wife) on my blog...I have strict orders NOT to post any pictures of her. It's ok to poke a little fun here and there.....but post a pic of her and there will be BIG trouble...and you thought there was Big Trouble in Little China...you know the movie...ok I'll drop it.
That is Tammy's right arm, I don't think she'll care about this picture but as we all know...I've been wrong before.
I love to eat at ALL Midtown Sundries but the one in Cornelius is my favorite. They have a boat dock with a “wildlife feed machine”, you put a quarter in and you receive feed for ducks and carp....it tastes pretty good too...in case you have to wait to be seated! :)
If you do feed the wildlife, it won't take long and the water will be teeming with bream, carp, ducks and Canadian geese. This is great if you have children…of all ages. Tammy will give me a couple of quarters…and I’m happy for at least 30 minutes. :)
Another reason I like this restaurant, they have some healthy choices on the menu. (Don't worry...they have plenty of unhealthy ones as well.) They offer boiled shrimp as an appetizer and they have an excellent selection of salads. Great bonus….you can add grilled chicken, shrimp or tuna to almost all of the salad items. (of course, stay away from the croutons and high fat cheeses and dressings.)
"Nice casual waterfront dining location. Good food and service, reasonably priced ..."
Boat Ride
I’ve received emails from people wanting to go for a ride in my boat. They erroneously believe that the boat in the picture above…is mine. THIS IS NOT MY BOAT! I don’t quite make enough money from this blog to pay for a boat. Ok, ok….I don’t make any money from this blog.
Here's a picture of a lady wrestler from China who REALLY wants to go for a boat ride. The picture was taken by a friend after she heard the news that it's not my boat.
She had offered to be my house maid for a month and to change the transmission in my truck if I give her a boat ride. I told her that there was nothing wrong with the transmission in my truck and that I already have a house maid….me!
The boat....is actually a "Party Boat" owned by the restaurant, they have evening trips out on the lake.

One Cool Guy...and one Not-So-Cool

I thought I would show some pics where I have ALL of my clothes on... :) LOL! I really loved saying that.
Here I am with my son Brad, the "not" so cool guy. In case you are still confused as to which one is me..., I am the cool guy on the left. You can tell that I am the cool guy because I am the guy with the ZZ Top "pair of cheap sunglasses". :)
This pic was taken the middle of June, we were celebrating Brad’s graduation from high school. Oh how the years pass quickly…
BTW, you can listen to ZZ Top and “Cheap Sunglasses” as you read the blog, just click on the link.

Treat the Symptoms not the Illness
The medical community seems too often to have a “treat the symptoms” mentality.
I am not a big conspiracy theorist…but…if you, “follow the money”, this approach keeps “big pharma” fat and happy with increasing sales.
By the way, did you know that we didn’t really go to the moon!? It was staged! LOL..just kidding.
* Before I really get into this, let me say that I KNOW there are legitimate circumstances where drugs and surgeries are absolutely, positively necessary. My point is that too often, drugs/surgery is a “first response” or in some cases the only response.
Examples:
· If you are overweight? Take a fat reducing elixir or have liposuction or stomach reduction or….
· If you have high cholesterol? Don’t’ Diet and exercise take a pill.
· Type2 Diabetes? Don’t change your lifestyle, take pills and shots.
· Depressed? Don’t change circumstances, take a pill.
As obesity and it’s related health ailments only increase, the resulting increase in costs will only grow as well.
PS - Brad used to LOVE Whinny the Pooh...and Tigger Too. Me? I was a Piglet man of course. :)

Cooksey Cough
I just realized this, today marks another P90X Milestone...I am half way home to completing the 90 day workouts. The days and weeks are flying by now. After this week I will have a Recovery Week to look forward to, which is somewhat easier than the standard push or pull workout weeks.
YES! the workouts are still tough and I still sweat...er....perspire as much as I did orginally. As noted early on, the workouts should not get any easier. As you become stronger you will be able to do more reps or lift more weight...and that is what you should do to receive the full benefits of the workouts.

Cooksey's A Quitter???
First…I know what some of you are saying…”Cooksey hasn’t posted in like 36 hrs …he must be running out of material”.
Folks, “that isn’t happening”. Just been busy over the weekend and the first of this week. I have much more to say…you may not want to read it… but there is much more to say my friends!
So here we go!
----
Honey I Shrunk Myself!
First Rule they tell you with Beachbody, the company behind P90X, (ok, it may not be THE first), do not watch the scale. Follow the meal plan, follow the workout schedule and don’t worry about your weight.
That is what Steve is doing from now on. I am not watching the scale any more… (we’ll see).
The reason I bring this up…I have reached a new low of 171.5 pounds!
I weigh in every morning and I’ve been in the 172-176 range …until today. I am not going to worry about it, I am going to follow both the workout plan and the nutrition plan and let the pounds fall as they may.
* For the record, I have not run / jogged in 9 days.
---
Steve’s A Quitter??
The day I was diagnosed as being Diabetic (Feb ’09) and I was told that I would likely be on insulin for the rest of my life, I was in the hospital. At that moment…
I did decide to fight for my “freedom”, freedom from the shackles of measuring and injecting insulin FOUR TIMES A DAY and freedom from having to take pills for cholesterol and hypertension.
My relatives are from the mountains of NC where fatback, cornbread, biscuits and gravy were daily staples and I had seen too many of my relatives go down the same road I was on…it was a slow ride down….and I wasn’t going down without a fight. Having said all that, the day after I came home from the hospital…I was wavering.
I can only assume I was wavering due to another fight that was going on at the same time…I was fighting depression. I remember thinking that I could learn to deal with taking shots FOUR TIMES A DAY, “it wasn’t that bad” and I could continue eating like I had been…maybe a little better but basically the same. Yes, I could just take the medications and insulin and life may not be that bad…I could learn to deal with it.
Unlike some people that I have spoken to since my hospital stay…
I decided:
-NOT to settle for taking diabetes drugs just so I could eat a lot of simple carbohydrates.
-NOT to settle for taking more pills just so I could continue being a couch potato.
So why do I tell you all this?
So you will know the depth of my depression AND how close I was to “giving up”.
Obviously, I decided to fight for my fitness, not give up and at least at the moment, I am medication and insulin FREE! But I must stay vigilant, for I never know what tomorrow may bring.
Spring Forward to TODAY, Tuesday 07/07/09…today, it is difficult to describe how great I feel. Another reason I went back through some of the “old stuff” is so….
YOU WILL KNOW HOW THANKFUL I AM TO BE WHERE I AM TODAY!
Sunday - I played basketball and I felt GREAT! I am lighter, stronger and generally more fit. Words just can’t describe how I feel…ok that’s enough but it does feel great.
BTW, I know some of you are saying…but didn’t you get hurt….YES, but my injury was not related to my fitness level. I could have had the same injury if I’d been my old sluglike self and I was rebounding for my 10 year old nephew.
Monday & Tuesday – Worked out with P90X and FELT GREAT! (I know it’s redundant but what can I say???)
Let’s see what Wednesday brings….shall we?

Mishmash of Stuff ---sounds like a good stew...
It’s Sunday so this also marks the end of another P90X week!!!
*** I CAN NOT FIND ANY PICS OF ME when I was obese…if you have ANY PICS please let me know. For some reason, I'm not quite sure why but I wasn’t posing for many pics when I was 230+ pounds. This reminds me,
....there was a Mexican restaurant that had great food but I stopped going there unless others insisted. They had these full length exterior windows and as I walked in from the parking lot…I could see myself in the reflection and I would be disgusted at what I saw….not so disgusted as to not stuff myself on high fat food however.
This was the same restaurant where I ordered and ate two lunches. It’s along story…I ordered them for “the table" but no one else wanted the 2nd lunch….you know, waste not want not. Wait...that’s not an excuse…I WAS A GLUTON! Said it! Experts say that realizaton is the first step to recovery. :)
FYI – I thought I would “sprinkle” some marketing insights in my posts, you know… so you receive a balanced diet of data/input….my single largest page view day was June 24th. The page’s title>>> “XXX- maX’s p90X piX”.
So…I am thinking about changing the focus of the blog to “nutrition and fitness for the Porn industry”. …just kidding!! I called the porn industry association, unfortunately they weren’t interested.
---
Here is a pic I left out from the P90X Day 30 pics. I didn't want to scare people away but today I said, "what the heck". As you can see I was sucking in my stomach here and attempting to pump up what little muscles I have.
---
Completed Kenpo X yesterday, it is a cardio workout that utilizes boxing/martial arts moves so there is kicking and punching mixed into this low impact workout. The only set that I don’t do are the jumping jacks, I can do them but it puts stress on my knees. Given my history of knee issues, I substitute another activity when these come up.
That is important to remember, there will likely be exercises that you will not be able to do (not matter what your workout is) …but that is ok, you can substitute exercises that you can do.
Regardless of your workout, if you walk, if you jog, P90X....regardless...
DO YOUR BEST AND FORGET THE REST
Peace out!

XXX ... maX’s p90X piX
I know I'm reaching here with the title...but as we all know, the writing in this blog isn't very good and some of you won't read unless it's a "catchy" title. :)
Just a quick note, each day I typically have a topic in mind for my blog post before I begin to write it. So I open up my word processor and usually before I have written a couple of sentences…the topic has changed.
Today is no different; my topic initially was going to be about recent studies on obesity in US. Did you know that approximately 36% of Americans are now OBESE! That will lead to ever higher healthcare costs PER PERSON not just in total spending. You see, not only will poor health affect you individually, (longevity, quality of life, increased costs etc) but it will affect the nation as a whole…..I was going to talk about that but decided not to…..instead I got side tracked. :)

Max was acting more reserved than normal this morning, as you can see by the pic and he didn’t want to talk about it...at first.
FYI - I was going to use the word melancholy because ...I think that word is more accurate, but I thought I might lose some readers if I used it. It's just not a word used "around here". :)
Back to maX, as the morning wore on, he acted like something was bothering him but if I asked him he said, 'oh nothing, don't worry about it'. I finally figured it out...he was upset because I had posted my pics on the blog but did not post his. I had to do something...just look at him. SO, to smooth things over…here are the overdue P90X 30 day pics for Max.
Taking pictures of Max isn't easy. He doesn’t like to have his picture taken. Yet, he wants them posted…dogs…go figure…can’t live with them, can’t live without them....or is that women...?

WHAT WAS THAT!
I swear I didn’t see this in real time…did he lick is lips or is he eating a purple onion skin??
LOL! I've never seen a pic like this...it's kind of odd looking....isn't it? Doesn't look like a dog licking his lips or nose or whatever the heck he was licking at the time.

Max thinks this is his best “side”. He tucked in his tail due to privacy issues, not to mention possible TOS violations. (terms of service…no porn in other words…)
You can’t count ribs on Max….yet. A few more Yoga Relaxation Therapies and he should be getting close.
Have a great day!

Day 30 - P90X Pics
As you view these pics, keep in mind that I had already been working out for a little over three months and had been jogging up to 10.5 miles at a time when the pics on the left were taken.
I am back to jogging now, I did not jog the first two weeks of P90X. Now that I am back jogging, I've cut my miles in half. I have noticed a huge benefit to this, the joints in my back, legs and feet are feeling much better.
More to come, take care and good night.

Updates P90X and Stuff.
Speaking of Max…he got really mad one time, I wouldn’t feed him and it was past his scheduled feeding time.…
...the next thing I knew the room started shaking and then Max started glowing a bright red…since that day, Max is fed on schedule.
P90X - Week 3 is History! It was a tough week to get through; the primary reason for this I believe is the adding of running to my routine about 10 days ago. I ended up running 17.5 miles this week.
Week 4 starts tomorrow and they call it Recovery Week – It’s not an easy week, there will be more cardio and less weight / resistance training. The purpose is to allow your muscle to re-cooperate and get ready for another (3) week block of weight training.
I TRY not to do any physical training on Sundays (my rest day)…but to be honest it’s difficult to do nothing. If I do nothing, I feel like I am falling behind… So, I did what I did last Sunday and that is perform some tests to see how my goals are coming along.
Goal Updates (with 3 weeks down and 10 to go) :
1) Goal to stay within “normal” BMI Rating. Weighed 176 lbs this morning so my BMI range is still “normal”.
2) Goal of 30 push ups – completed 16 Push Ups this morning, this was a pleasant surprise. I had done 13 last week and 7 before I started P90X.
3) Goal: Running 7 minute mile: Last week I ran a sub-9 minute mile, I didn’t use a stop watch so I didn’t know if it was an 8:01 or an 8:59 minute mile. Today I used a stop watch and this was an UN-pleasant surprise. Today I ran an 8:53 minute mile….not bad I guess for a 48 yr old man who had the body shape of a lima bean a few months ago….BUT I was hoping to be closer to 8:00. To run a 7 minute mile, I will have to shave almost 2 minutes off my mile time…that will be tough to do.
4) 32” jeans – no change
5) Beating my sons in basketball – no update. I did go to a court and shoot some today. Tammy, my wife took the pictures. As you can plainly see…”I still got it”, if somebody wants some…. Bring it! :)
I do want to point out a couple of things...notice the muscular arm and delts....uh huh. LOL! However, THE MOST important thing I want to point out....the perfect form. If you could bottle this...well, I don't even want to think about it.

Max the Magnificent!
In doing market analysis of my page CTRs and eCPMs, I noted an incremental variance in click-thru rates on the days I have digital images of Max.
….or to put it another way, people like to see pictures of MAXIMUS!
Therefore…I bring you “Max the Magnificent”.

To the left, is Max waiting for me to fix him breakfast. Usually, a couple of days each week I clean out the refrigerator. I take out some of the food that is getting older and I add it to Max’s dogfood.
NO I DO NOT FEED MAX OLD & SPOILED FOOD!!
I do however, feed the spoiled dog, “older” food.
You know, food that has "some age" but doesn't yet have the bacterial levels high enough to make them visible to the naked eye. (ok, I'll leave this alone now).
Wait a minute….I think I have the pics mixed up.
I do have the pics mixed up, the first picture is actually Max performing another Yoga Relaxation Therapy Session, I get these confused!!!
The second picture (to the right) is Max waiting for breakfast. (I have to keep these organized better.)
If you look closely you can see the difference.
In the first pic, he is about to start panting from the strain of the Yoga Relaxation Therapy Session. Actually, he started panting immediately after the picture was taken.
In the pic to the right, you can clearly see that his eyes are laser focused on the food handler, he's attempting to discern any movements that might suggest a meal or snack may be forthcoming.

Then....BAM! He's "on location" and as you can see in the picture to the left, he means business.
If you look closely, you'll notice that drool has formed on the left side of his jaw, it can form quickly and in seemingly endless supplies.
BTW, I sent NASA an email about using Max's drool as a jet propulsion lubricant. The day after the email, these black helicopters started flying over my house...I wonder if it has anything to do with the email???
Enough about Max ALREADY!
I have actually lost another pound... "and another one bites the dust."
To the right is a picture of my scale this morning, 174 lbs! A NEW LOW has been reached. I really don't mind losing another pound, but I don't want to lose any more weight. I want to maintain and turn remaining fat into muscle.
I honestly feel that I am eating a “ton” of food…I eat 4-6 meals a day. Granted they are smaller meals BUT I do NOT feel hungry, when I feel hungry….I eat. I may have to eat more....
Caloric Expenditures – in addition to my P90X workouts 6 days a week, I’ve started adding in some jogging. I was hesitant at first but after talking with some folks online who do P90X and run, I’ve added it back in to my routine. One lady in particular was very helpful, she is and has done P90X as part of her marathon training...very impressive woman. She says that P90X gives her added strength and flexibility which assists with her running but it also reduces the odds of injuries.
On top of all of the benefits, I truly do enjoy running/jogging. I started out jogging …only recently could what I do be called “running”. I am sure there are “speed walkers” who have better mile times than I do…or did.
Miles Last 7 days:
Wednesday 5.6 miles (this was my “punishment” run, after eating pizza)
Saturday 5.6 miles
Sunday 1 mile
Monday 2 miles
Tuesday 5.6 miles
My plan is to maintain 15-20 miles per week but only run when my body feels like it. This is still a decent number of miles but down from the 30 - 40 miles I was running before the P90X workouts.
Until we meet again,
Steve

What Now, Brown Cow?
I need some new goals….
Numero uno (that’s Spanish for #1) – to maintain a BMI reading not to exceed “normal”, I ain’t back sliding this time, in addition....
...as part of the P90X routine/system you set goals for yourself, goals you expect to accomplish after your 90 days are completed.
Goal Tending Time:
1) To do 30 push ups, consecutively – not in a day or week. :) I don’t believe I’ve ever done 30 push ups at one time. Just so you know, before I started P90X, I strained to do 7…so I have a ways to go.
2) Run a 7 minute mile - given my age and the condition of my joints, I really don’t know if this is possible. When I was jogging for distance, I ran early miles in the 11 – 12 minute range, 10.5 minute mile was the best I could do.
The reason I chose this goal? In junior high, we had to run a sub-7 minute mile to make the basketball team. So if I did it when I was 15….I can do it when I’m 48….right????
3) BEAT MY SONS IN BASKETBALL! I had to add this goal, when my weight climbed into the 220’s and 230’s, I would still attempt to play my sons in basketball….and they would win (imagine that!).
By the way, I beat Perry in basketball when I was near my heaviest, so even when I was my most sedentary, most slovenly, most slug-like (you get the idea)
…I still beat him “like a bad step-child”. Beating or continuing to beat Perry isn’t a goal....it’s too easy…there’s no challenge to it. Goals need to challenge you, to inspire you to improve. Beating Perry just doesn’t qualify…maybe my goal will be to not let him score....
4) Last and final goal – to fit into 32” jeans. By my senior year in high school, I was wearing 32" jeans ….that is enough of a goal right now. Currently, I can squeeeeze into 33’s so wearing 32’s isn’t much of a stretch, but remember…I’ve already lost all the weight I want to lose. I want to gain strength from here on out.
What’s that…you don’t think I can wear 33’s….ok, you think that is B.S. well here’s pictures to prove it.….

My Quest Continues - P90X
WARNING: PICTURES YOU ARE ABOUT TO SEE BELOW MAY SCAR YOU FOR LIFE (or not), IT MAY BE DAYS BEFORE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO DIGEST AND PROCESS SOLID FOODS.
I have been “working out” since 2/18/09, in those earlier days “working out” consisted of walking around while carrying 8 lb dumb bells doing curls, military presses etc. More recently, I have been using 20 lb dumb bells, doing push ups and running 6-8 miles per day. So, I thought I was in decent shape….as it turned out, I wasn’t as fit as I thought I was. After (3) months of working out 5-7 days a week I had reached what I feel, is a good weight for me, 180 lbs. I still have fat that I need to turn into muscle and towards that end, I started using P90X. It is a fitness system (with nutrition and workouts) that you often see on late night infomercials.
Before I go further, I need to insert this paragraph. Perry (ex co-worker) was upset because I had not mentioned his name thus far in the blog. He felt that he had played a critical role in my improved fitness and deserved at least a mentioning. To be honest, he’s absolutely correct. He had been pushing me to diet and get fit for years, especially in the last year and he has been great at helping to keep me motivated. Perry was the first to mention P90X to me and at the time I said “no” because I thought it would be too much of an increase in intensity for me. His advice did help me get fit because I’d pick up pointers from watching the infomercials and implement them into my workouts. I felt that I was in decent shape and ready for the real deal, thanks Perry!!!!
Yesterday was day one – all I can say is WOW! it was intense BUT, you can do the workouts at your own pace. For example, the day 1 routine’s video is about 55 minutes long, my session took over 1 ½ hrs and it pushed me pretty hard. The session was divided into two sections Chest/Back and Abs. Both sections pushed me but the ab section…I could barely complete half the repetitions…but that is ok. The goal is to establish a base line and strive to improve.
As part of the “process” I needed to create “BEFORE PICS” – you have been warned, viewing these pictures may scar you for life, it may be weeks before you can digest solid food. The P90X program lasts for 90 days so I will post the 30-60-90 day pics here as well.
Enjoy the pics....I know you will! J

Totally Nude Before and After Pics
I promised Bryan (a former co-worker) that I would post some “totally nude” Before and After pictures today.
Soooo without further delay, here are the Totally Nude Before and After Pics.
Before After
Max, didn’t lose much weight...to be honest, he didn’t lose any. He does fine with the prepared meals but tends to eat a lot of snacks between meals.
What's that Max? Yes Max, in 5 seconds it will be time to roll over, 5-4-3-2-1, GO!

Max's legal name is Cooksey's King Maximus, he's an AKC registered Yellow Lab and our youngest son. If you enjoy this post, let Max know about it.
